My master artist is Frida Kahlo. She was born in 1907 and died in 1954. She was a painter and was best known for her brilliantly colored self-portraits dealing with themes such as identity, the human body, and death. She was a self-taught artist who started painting after she was hit by a train in 1925. She would say “I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best,”
She became a feminist icon through her character, activism, and art. Her paintings were intimate, and personal, included nudity, and were seen as revolutionary for her time. During the feminist movement in the 70s, Kahlo was admired as an 'icon of female creativity. I chose this artist because I wanted to pick a female artist and I've always enjoyed her work. I made a flat slab to create the plate and sketched out the fruits. And then made a giant pinch pot for my watermelon bowl. A challenge I faced was painting with all the different glazes and doing the detail in the shading. And not being able to add the flag that was in the painting because it would stand up straight. But in the end, I liked how it came out i like he bird and all the different colors and fruits.
